Menopause is a reality for half the population. Yet, it remains one of the least discussed workplace topics. In a recent episode of The Crafty Counsel Podcast, Lucie Allen, Chief Growth Officer at BARBRI, shared an honest account of a personal experience that sparked her Menopause Matters campaign.

Lucy described being in a high-stakes board meeting when sudden, heavy bleeding left her feeling shocked and unprepared. In that moment, she didn’t know how to react. The incident showed how isolating menopause symptoms can be in professional settings. It also underlined the need for colleagues and organisations to be ready with empathy and practical support.

From that day, Lucy began connecting with other women to share experiences. Together, they created a guide for both individuals and employers. These stories revealed a wide range of symptoms – from brain fog and joint pain to sleep disruption and low mood. They also highlighted a shared frustration: workplace conversations about menopause are still rare.

What workplaces can do
Lucy and the Menopause Matters group suggest several steps:

  • Normalise the conversation – offer training, run workshops, and invite men to be active allies.
  • Create practical policies – include flexible working and clear processes for raising concerns.
  • Make small changes that count – provide free sanitary products, keep desk fans available, and introduce ideas like the “black cardigan” in restrooms for emergencies.

Why it matters

Menopause is not a niche issue. Lucy noted that 16 million women are in the UK workforce, and all will go through menopause at some stage. Without understanding and support, organisations risk losing experienced people at the height of their careers.

Lucy’s call to action is simple. Keep talking. Share stories, raise awareness, and push for change. And importantly, do it all year – not just on Menopause Awareness Day.
