Getting approval for extra headcount isn’t easy, especially when budgets are tight and legal is seen as a cost centre.

In this short walk-and-talk video, Judy-Anne, Senior Client Relationship Manager at Ashurst Reach, shares three practical strategies to help you get legal headcount approved without waiting for the perfect moment or an open cheque book.

1. Think beyond the salary budget

Hiring freezes don’t always mean there’s no money. Judy suggests looking into project funding or cross-functional budgets when other departments will benefit.

“Be flexible with where the money comes from,” she says. “If the value is there, the budget can follow”.

2. Make ROI clear and tangible

Stakeholders want more than a hunch. Judy recommends positioning the new hire as a solution to a clear business problem, such as clearing a backlog, managing risk, or speeding up a strategic initiative.

Sharing example CVs or pricing from flexible resourcing providers can help bring the role to life.

3. Get buy-in early and keep the process moving

Don’t go it alone. Involve stakeholders early so they feel ownership of the business case. Judy also stresses the need for speed.

“Understand your process, communicate clearly, and avoid delays,” she says. “That’s how you hold onto great candidates”.
